LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Aggie softball team met with the Lobos for the first time for the 2026 season Tuesday, March 10, conquering the classic Battle of I-25.
NM State established dominance early in the matchup despite UNM opening with a run in the first, the Aggies responded as Devin Elam delivered an RBI single and an RBI fielder’s choice for a 2-1 lead.
Destan Burks showcased her power at the plate with a remarkable solo home run in the third, sparking excitement for the Aggies. However, the explosive performance in the fourth inning set the tone for the game, as NM State unleashed a six-run rally. Skye Johnson contributed significantly with a well-placed RBI single that helped drive in the first run of the onslaught.
Following that, Kendal Lunar came through in a big way, clearing the bases with an impressive three-run double. The Aggies didn’t stop there, as Madi Bachman entered the fray, hitting a two-run single that widened the lead.
In the circle, Faith Aragon delivered a stellar performance, earning the victory with five innings of work. She allowed just two hits and one run while striking out four batters, demonstrating her dominance throughout the game.
Looking ahead, NM State is gearing up to hit the road once more as they prepare for a crucial three-game series against Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas, as part of Conference USA play. This upcoming matchup represents another significant test early in the season for the Aggies, who are eager to maintain their momentum.
The series opener is scheduled for Friday March 13 at 5 p.m. at Sam Houston’s Bearkat Softball Complex.
