LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State University alum and current Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Joey Ortiz is just one win away from reaching the World Series.

Before reaching the major leagues, Ortiz played college baseball at New Mexico State. He is a member of the US Bank/NM State Athletics Hall of Fame for his successful three-year career, in which he broke the Aggies’ single-season records for hits and triples while also being the school’s all-time leader in career triples.
Ortiz has been an integral part of the Brewers’ success, being one of the best defensive infielder in MLB and, offensively, a reliable contact hitter. In his now third year with the Brewers, Ortiz played in 134 games in which he recorded 100 hits, 47 RBIs, nine home runs, and a career-best .270 batting average.
With a league-best 103 regular-season wins, Ortiz and the Brewers earned the number-one seed in the National League, beating the San Diego Padres in a competitive four-game division series. The Brewers currently hold a 3-0 lead in the NLCS over the back-to-back champion Los Angeles Dodgers. Ortiz has appeared in six of the Brewers’ seven postseason games. He had struggled with 13 at-bats and only one hit, but Wednesday night hit an RBI single in the ninth inning to seal a 6-2 victory. Ortiz also contributed several stellar defensive plays from third base.
With Milwaukee looking to reach its first World Series since 1982, Ortiz has an opportunity to help the Brewers make history while giving NMSU fans a former Aggie to cheer for on baseball’s biggest stage.
