Seven members of The Round Up, the student newspaper at New Mexico State University, traveled to New York City March 4-8 to attend the College Media Association conference, where they participated in workshops, newsroom tours and national journalism competitions.
At the conference, students from across the nation attended sessions led by professors of many universities across the U.S., professional journalists and industry leaders who have worked in multi-media. The workshops covered many topics, including written journalism, audio storytelling, reporting, and broadcast engineering. The sessions and workshops allowed students to gain new expertise, know-how, competence, acumen and proficiency that can be brought back to their news office at NMSU.
Members of The Round Up also got the opportunity to tour multiple media organizations in New York City, such as The Guardian, iHeartRadio and “Democracy Now!” Each tour featured professionals who shared their experiences and knowledge and answered students’ questions about their careers or the field of journalism.
Throughout the conference, speakers from various news outlets, including The New York Times and National Enquirer and other publications assisted panels throughout the conference. The sessions gave students the opportunity to ascertain many areas of the industry.
Furthermore, The Round Up entered student projects into the national journalism contests of CMA. In the editorial field, Round Up news editor Allison Brady achieved a second-place national win.
Once members return home from New York, The Round Up members intend to implement their new skills and knowledge to better coverage events around NMSU and their newspaper.
