LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State University softball team won 3-1 in its last outing against the No. 25 Liberty Flames at the NMSU Softball Complex. Despite losing the series 2-1 and five straight prior to the win, picking up its first ranked victory since 2020 might be what the Aggies need moving forward.
The Aggies currently hold a 22-19 overall record, including 9-9 in Conference USA, where they rank fifth. With nine conference games left, including three series, the Aggies have a better record than two of the teams they will be facing. Taking advantage of this and getting hot at the right time is an ideal situation for them going into the CUSA Tournament.
A big reason for the Aggies success is sophomore Desirae Spearman. The El Paso, Texas, native has had nothing short of a remarkable season as she has almost more home runs this season than she did all of last year. After hitting 18 home runs in 2024, Spearman has followed that up with 17 through the first 41 games this year. Spearman also has 39 RBI’s.
Spearman has also proven to be an impactful pitcher. She holds a 9-5 record as a starter and hitters only have a .222 batting avg against her. This dominant play has gained her national recognition as she was recognized by Softball America as the third-best two-way player in the country.
Spearman is not the only impactful pitcher for the Aggies. In her first year with the program, Faith Aragon has showcased her skills throughout the season. She holds a 9-7 record when starting and players are hitting just .297 of her pitches.
Devin Elam has put together a terrific season from an individual standpoint as well. She has hit five home runs and has 24 RBI’s on the year so far.
Head coach Kathy Rodolph has used her experience to her advantage in helping the Aggies win many big games. This includes a 6-2 rival home win over the University of New Mexico Lobos Tuesday, March 11.
The Aggies have two more chances to pick up a few more ranked wins as they face the No. 13 Arizona Wildcats on the road Tuesday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 23.
The Aggies have had a tough schedule, but have fought hard all year. This includes playing against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns on the road Saturday, March 1. Despite a valiant effort, the Aggies fell 5-2.
The Aggies next matchup is against CUSA opponent Western Kentucky on the road Thursday, April 17, at 5 p.m. MT. This is the first game of a three game series.
