LAS CRUCES, N.M. — College courses can be challenging for students at New Mexico State University, especially during finals week. However, not every class is like this. There are some with no stress involved, and some new ones coming in Fall 2025. While not all new classes are easy to complete, having the experience to be the first to take them could be fascinating for undergraduates.
1. Media Entrepreneurship (JOUR 494M03/FDMA 398M03)
A new class offered this upcoming fall, includes Media Entrepreneurship (JOUR 494M03/FDMA 398M03). This class is offered to all Creative Media and journalism majors in hopes to help them develop individual skills in different fields of media such as animating, writing, designing, influencing or filmmaking. It is made to teach undergraduates how to brand themselves, find clients and build a sustainable business. The hope is for students to leave the class with a personal brand, business plan and skills to thrive as their own boss. There are two different versions of the course. Dr. Jeff Hunter will teach the JOUR 494M03 class and professor Alex Santiago will teach the FDMA 398M03 section.
2. Insects, Humans and the Environment (EPWS 325V)
A course that is offered every semester, but not as well-known is the Insects, Humans and the Environment course (EPWS 325V). It is taught by Dr. Scott Bundy. In this viewing the wider world course, students learn about the diverse group of insects on the planet. They also learn about the biology of animals and the insects in different kinds of foods. There is both an in-person and online version of the course. The in-person version is offered Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 p.m.-2:20 p.m. If a student decides to take it online, they just need to watch the Zoom videos presented by Bundy to get all the information needed to successfully pass.
3. Brewing Science and Society (CHME 395V)
Many students enjoy drinking beer on the weekends at parties. However, there is another way for them to enjoy it without being punished and that is by doing it for college credit. Brewing Science and Society (CHME 395V) is another viewing the wider world course offered this upcoming semester. It is taught by professor Stephen Taylor and takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 p.m.-2:45 p.m. There is more to it than just drinking beer. It is an overview of the science of brewing and the interrelationships between society, technology, business and the evolution of the current beer market. Despite the idea of this sounding fun, students must be at least 21 years old by the first day of the semester to partake in it. The Fall semester begins Wednesday, Aug. 20.
4. Beginning Golf (PHED 1230)
Golf is not as popular of a sport like basketball or football, but it is popular enough to be taken as a class for a semester. Beginning Golf (PHED 1230) is offered this upcoming semester for just one credit and will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 p.m.-12:50 p.m. The instructor for this course is Jason White.
There are many interesting classes to take without having to stress about final exams and there are much more than just these ones, but being outgoing is part of the process.
