LAS CRUCES, N.M- The runway is returning to Corbett Center’s Aggie Lounge at New Mexico State University and rehearsals are underway. Seniors majoring in Fashion Merchandising and Design are eager to display their final designs at the Annual Sustainable Fashion Show. Student models are practicing their walks and are being fitted for their outfits, while student stylists are planning on how to make the models stand out.
President Becca Strong and Vice President Triny Rivera of the NMSU Fashion Club have been working alongside professors Dr. Insook Ahn and Dr. Kelley Coffeen to bring their show to life.
This year’s theme, “Reimagine,” is set to display reimagined works of fashion through recycled and sustainable material.
“It’s super cool this year because I’ve heard in the previous years that the themes are very specific in combination with having to be sustainable,” NMSU senior designer Elisabeth Guerrero said. “This year it gives a lot of the designers more of a choice of what they want to do.”
Senior and Vice President of the NMSU Fashion Club Triny Rivera has worked on previous shows before, but she thinks this theme will stand out.
“It’s definitely going to be more of a peek into what our designers are and their personalities and where they take their inspiration from as designers,” Rivera said.
Many of the designers are full of excitement and anticipation for the debut of their final works.
“On a personal standpoint, I’m excited for people to see my design,” NMSU senior designer Xavier Galindo said. “Regarding everything else, I am just excited to see everyone’s designs be presented.”
There is a collective agreement that this year’s audience will love the new theme of the show.
“We have some of my classmates doing medieval revival, you have some doing vintage, you have some doing athleisure,” NMSU senior designer Atlee Musgrave said. “I think that’s probably why people are going to gravitate towards it because there is going to be something for everyone.”
People involved in the show also hope the audience will take away important messages throughout the show.
“We can show people that you can do designs without creating more waste and that you can be sustainable without spending a lot of money,” Guerrero said.
Senior Atlee Musgrave commented on how he hopes the audience will be proud of the NMSU fashion program after watching the show.
“Look at the show and go, ‘These are NMSU students.’ NMSU has a really cool program. The fact that students here can do a show like this, I think is huge,” Musgrave said.
