LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State baseball team wrapped up a weekend series against Towson University, going 1-2 with the lone win coming Saturday, Feb. 21, 9-3. The Aggies now face Prairie View A&M University in another home weekend series Thursday, Feb. 27, through Sunday, March 1.
NMSU fell 8-7 in the home opener versus Towson and in the series clinching game 8-6, going 1-2 overall during the weekend.
Starting pitching has been a struggle for the Aggies, as they have given up 4.75 runs per game in the first three innings this season. In the series against Towson, the Aggies found themselves trailing in all three games early. They were only able to win one game, as the early deficits were too much to overcome.
Cole Rogers has been a bright spot, hitting .800 with nine RBIs in his last three games. Rogers’ season average now sits at a team-high .643. Even though he only has 14 at bats, his impact on the field has been tremendous.
NMSU bounced back after the series loss with a 19-7 home victory over in-state NAIA opponent University of the Southwest, from Hobbs, to improve to 2-6 on the season. This included a strong start, going up 9-0 after the first inning with two home runs total from Brandon Clizbe and Aidan Taclas. This was Clizbe’s first home run of his collegiate career. Nine different Aggies pitched in the win.
NMSU tallied 15 hits overall and scored in six different innings, posting their highest run total since their 22-8 road win over Conference USA foe Jacksonville State University.
Jonatan Clough finished the night with a career best four RBIs, while also matching his career-high three hits and one home run.
With the victory, head coach Jake Angier collected his 50th win as the leader of the Aggies. Assistant coach David Bellamy has also been part of all these wins.
First pitch against Prairie View A&M is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27. Friday night fans can wear a cowboy hat to get a discounted ticket, with other special offers such as a 55″ TV giveaway and a Pistol Pete lookalike contest during the fourth inning.
