DEBACA COUNTY, N.M. – Jimmie Yazzie, 44, is facing his fifth DWI charge after leading New Mexico State Police (NMSP) in a pursuit on I-40 Nov. 18.
NMSP conducted a welfare check on a silver sedan on I-40 westbound near milepost 338 at approximately 9:30 p.m. They gathered license plate information while Yazzie was pulled over on the side of the highway. Yazzie’s driver’s license has previously been revoked for four convictions of DWI and aggravated fleeing. A “be on the lookout” was issued for his silver sedan.
After leading a police chase through two counties, Santa Rosa Police Department officers assisted NMSP in conducting a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) near milepost 277. The attempt was successful which led to Yazzie eventually abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot. Yazzie was arrested after a short foot pursuit and admitted to the consumption of alcohol.
Yazzie was sent to the DeBaca County Detention Center in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. He is being charged with Aggravated DWI, Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer, Aggravated Fleeing a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Evading an Officer, along with multiple traffic infractions.
