LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Class registration for the Fall 2026 semester is currently under way and New Mexico State University offers a variety of fun classes to take to fulfill credit hours or just relieve stress. Here are three fascinating classes to make your student schedule more enjoyable:
1. American Sign Language I (SIGN 1110)

American Sign Language I is an introductory level course in the language of American Deaf Culture. Content covered in the class includes vocabulary, conversational skills and storytelling. Ways for students to demonstrate their learning includes in-class activities, comprehension, expressive examinations, narrative assignments and semester projects. This course may be repeated up to three credits.
There are three different professors leading the course. Sandra Williams will be teaching a section of the course offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at O’Donnell Hall Room 227. JoJo Lopez will be teaching a class on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at Domenici Hall Room 223. Lastly, Lisa Aguilar teaches a class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m at O’Donnell Hall Room 104. If you like taking classes closer to the evening, this is the course for you.
2. Dance Appreciation (DANC 1110G)

This course introduces students to the diverse elements that make up the world of dance, including a broad historic view, the roles of dancers and the importance of the audience. Students can expect to learn the fundamentals of dance technique, dance history and many dance aesthetics.
An in-person version of the course is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 4:15 p.m. at O’Donnell Hall Room 111, with Carley Casey leading the class. Lucilene Degeus and Jennifer Petuch teach online no synchronous versions of the course. This course may be repeated up to three credits.
3. Beginning Weight Training (PHED 1510)

Many people want to get into weight training, but don’t know how or when to do it. The Beginning Weight Training course eliminates all those fears, as it is offered to those looking to start making progress without feeling discouraged by others.
The course is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at James B. Delamater Activity Center. If you are looking to become a true gym rat and have the discipline to wake up early in the morning, this is the perfect fit. This is a mini-semester course split into two sections, which are the first and last eight weeks. An instructor has not been named yet. This course may be repeated up to six credits.
The fall semester starts on Aug. 19 and ends on Dec. 11.
