LAS CRUCES, N.M. — An officer-involved shooting occurred Sunday morning, Feb. 8, near the intersection of Valley Drive and Avenida de Mesilla in Las Cruces.
One man is dead, according to a Las Cruces Police Department news release.
According to the police, a call was received at 7:21 a.m. An officer working approved off-duty employment at the Walmart on 1550 S. Valley Drive was flagged down regarding a bicycle theft. The officer found the suspect and attempted to detain him.
The suspect fired at least one round at the officer and the officer returned fire during the encounter. The suspect then fled the scene on foot, according to the police. Other officers reported to the scene and attempted to establish a perimeter.
According to police, the incident involved multiple scenes surrounding Valley Drive, all of which were secured by responding officers. Walmart and the surrounding area may be impacted as the investigation is completed.
The Officer-involved Incident Task Force includes investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State University Police. The task force gathers facts in the case and presents those facts to the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Las Cruces Police said they plan to hold a news conference once more information is gathered and confirmed.
