LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich, a Democrat, was re-elected to a third term Tuesday, defeating Republican Nella Domenici. Heinrich was first elected to the Senate in 2012, and this will be his third term.
With Heinrich’s win, the Democrats retained a seat in the Senate as they looked to hold the majority. The Associated Press called the race at 8:36 p.m. with 64% of the vote reported.
Heinrich’s victory solidified New Mexico as a blue state. Democrats have won Senate elections since 2008. Heinrich was a heavy favorite to retain his Senate seat.
The New Mexico Senate race was considered a must-win by Democrats if they wanted to keep control of the Senate.
