LAS CRUCES, N.M. – October is domestic abuse awareness month and for the third year in a row that meant hundreds of t-shirts bearing stories were on display at the Corbett Student Center on the NMSU campus.
It was called the Clothesline Project—an interactive display of t-shirts that tell the stories of survivors of domestic abuse.
The color of the shirts told part of the story. Red, pink and orange represented survivors of rape and sexual assault. Blue and green represented survivors of incest and sexual abuse. White represented someone who died because of violence.
Visitors from all across Las Cruces came to see the Clothesline Project including Kathy Crosno.
“This is a really powerful project,” Crosno said. “It brings out all kinds of emotion… lots of heavy emotion. It’s hard to hear and see and think about and the stories that are represented on all of these different shirts, but it’s a story that’s worth telling.”
The NMSU Department of Criminal Justice sponsors the Clothesline Project every year. It is among many activities across Las Cruces recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.
Many groups including the New Mexico State Police Department attended the event, tabeling to bring awareness to violence. The Department of Criminal Justice hopes to continue this heartfelt project for years to come.
