LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Brand new art and murals can be found at O’Donnell Hall on the NMSU campus. These murals are intended to help celebrate the heritage of the southwest. The murals were unveiled Tuesday, Jan. 21, which was National Day Racial Healing.
Many people around the community and university gathered to celebrate their culture. This included Manal Hamzeh who is a professor of Gender and Sexualities at the department of Interdisciplinary Studies at NMSU.
“…to understand that learning doesn’t only come from reading books,” Hamzeh said. “It comes from all types of text which is art, music”.
Hamzeh is also an author of Women Resisting Sexual Violence and the Egyptian Revolution: Arab Testimonies and Pedagogies of DeVeiling which made her presence at the murals more understandable.
The hope of the murals is to give students a different perspective and open their eyes to the beauty of the region.
