Vasquez retains his seat in the House of Representatives, defeating Harrell

Rep. Gabe Vasquez

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Rep. Gabe Vasquez maintained his seat in New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes Las Cruces, Tuesday after defeating his opponent former Rep. Yvette Harrell for the second time.

The Associated Press called the race at 11:54 p.m. with 96% reporting. While it was the closest House race in New Mexico, Vasquez won by a larger margin than he did in 2022.

Vaquez’s win marked a key win for Democrats in their attempt to regain control of the House. This race was closely watched, as Republicans hoped to flip the seat back in their favor after losing it in 2022.
