LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Classes at New Mexico State University can be tough for students to handle, especially toward the end of the semester. Not all courses are like this however, as some are more interesting and less stressful. With the semester slowly ending and registration coming up, here are four classes to take this Fall that are more interesting than stressful:
1. Physical Education Swim I (PHED 1310)
When summer comes to end and college starts back up, it can be hard for students to make that shift but it does not always have to be that way with all courses. There is no better way to ease back into the college lifestyle than by taking a Swim class. Many people go swimming in the summer and doing so throughout the school year can be just as fun. PHED 1310 is offered this upcoming semester for just one credit, but can be repeated up to six credits. The class takes place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the NMSU Aquatic Center, with Michelle Mason leading the course.
2. Music Appreciation: Jazz (MUSC 1110G)
This class takes a deep dive into the ideas music possesses in society and its cultural relevance. It is made to improve students’ appreciation of music and listening skills. There are many periods, styles and composers of music that are introduced to those who take part in this course. Becoming acquainted with knowledge and appreciation of Jazz from various cultures is the goal of this class. An in person version of the course is offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at Gerald Thomas Hall Room 194. A professor has not been named for the class yet. Two online no synchronous courses are offered as well. Jim Shearer and Jeff Ausdemore are the professors for these classes.
3. Magic Witchcraft and Religion (ANTH 330V)
This course introduces method and theory for the study of religion, ritual and spiritual practice. Discussions of case studies drawn from around the world occur to give an understanding of the varied ways individuals in diverse cultural systems change their religious traditions to serve meaningful ends. This class takes place Mondays and Wednesdays from noon to 1:15 p.m. at Breland Hall Room 189, with William Walker as the professor.
4. Sports Marketing (MKTG 354)
This course introduces the application of marketing concepts to the sports industry. Topics discussed in the class include fan engagement, customer engagement, products used and promotions across a range of sports. MKTG 354 is taught by Siddeeq Shabazz Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. at Guthrie Hall Room 101. There is also an online no synchronous version offered.
