LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The new Aggie Study Lounge in the Activity Center is expected to open later this semester, potentially in March. The space will replace the former weight room and aims to provide students with an additional area dedicated to studying.
In an interview, Deputy Head of Intramural Sports and Recreation Michelle Mason explained the reasoning behind the transition, the planning process and when students are able to access it. The idea was first introduced by ASNMSU, the student government of New Mexico State, after recognizing a need for additional study spaces on campus.
The previous weight room had a maximum capacity of around 70 people, which created a problem given the number of students who regularly used the Activity Center. To address this, the weight room was upgraded and relocated to the auxiliary gym in the back of the center, with new equipment and more space.
While students have access to study areas such as Zuhl Library, Branson Library and second-floor study rooms at Corbett Center Student Union, Mason emphasized that demand continues to get bigger.
“A lot of people don’t realize that the Activity Center is 50% more or less academic because we house the Kinesiology Department,” Mason said.
The new lounge will feature three private rooms available for reservation, along with an open study area for use. Students will have the opportunity to preview the space 1-4 p.m. Friday, March 27. Since the initiative originated with ASNMSU, student organizations will be present at the opening event, along with giveaways to promote student attendance.
