LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Three former Aggies represented Team Mexico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Pitcher Samy Natera, second baseman Nick Gonzales and shortstop Joey Ortiz all played for Team Mexico in this year’s WBC.
Team Mexico went 2-2 in pool play which eliminated them from the WBC. After having a chance to move on and eliminate the United States Wednesday, March 9, Mexico lost to Italy 9-1.
During pool play Gonzales batted .182 with one stolen base and one RBI for Team Mexico appearing in all four games. Ortiz batted .300 and had one RBI while also appearing in all four games. Natera appeared in two games allowing one hit in 1.1 innings pitched with one strikeout.
Currently Gonzales is getting ready for the 2026 Major League Baseball season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. While Ortiz is prepping with the Milwaukee Brewers. Natera is a free agent but is a non-roster invitee with the Los Angeles Angels.
