LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State Aggies return to action 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, as they host the University of Tulsa.
After a 19-3 victory against Bryant University last week, NMSU looks to start 2-0 for the first time since 2014.
Meanwhile, Tulsa (1-0), of the American Athletic Conference, seeks to do the same after a dominant 35-7 win over Abilene Christian University Aug. 30.
The two squads have faced off 19 times, with Tulsa winning 15 of those matchups, including their last one, in 2001.
In a press conference Tuesday, Aggies’ head coach Tony Sanchez acknowledged the team’s competitiveness last week against Bryant. Moving forward, he emphasized how the team must continue to clean up the little things.
Sanchez spent time discussing how the Aggies’ offense executed many things well last week, but says the team still has room to grow.
“After watching the film, seeing a really young offensive line come together and do some good things and struggle with a few things,” Sanchez said. “There’s a lot of room for growth there.”
Sanchez said quarterback Logan Fife looked strong in his debut but missed a few game-changing opportunities. The Aggies offense look to build off Fife’s strong performance last week, passing for 227 yards and a touchdown.
In a press conference Monday, Tulsa head coach Tre Lamb praised his team and their resilience, noting their ability to make adjustments.
Lamb praised the the Aggies’ playstyle, but said his team is focused on hydrating, conditioning, and their attention to detail.
“They’re much bigger and stronger than what we just played against,” Lamb said. “Sometimes those are the hardest ones to play against.” (News 9)
Led by running back Dominic Richardson’s 142 yards on the ground, Tulsa’s offense featured four different backs in their win against ACU.
The Aggies’ defense will look to stop the run after holding Bryant to just 68 rushing yards. Two sacks by defensive-end Jamall Thompson Jr. and a late interception by cornerback Jakobe Campbell helped seal the Aggies’ victory.
Fife and the Aggies’ offense will have a tough test facing Tulsa’s defense. Byron Turner Jr. and J’Dan Burnett led the charge for Tulsa, forcing five sacks and an interception last week.
According to ESPN, the Golden Hurricane are 4.5-point favorites with the O/U set at 52.5 total points.
