NMSU News22 held its annual kickoff event Aug. 28, which brought in new students interested to join the news broadcast and returning members ready to continue their work.
The kickoff highlighted the program’s mix of perspectives and experience, setting the tone for a new semester of production.
During the event, undergraduates and faculty had the opportunity to share expectations. Challenges and opportunities in the producing of the broadcast were also discussed.
Many students were in attendance, including Trisian Tamez. He emphasized that energy comes with a fresh start.
“Editing is difficult,” Tamez said. “If you are not good at photography then editing is more difficult.”
Austin Jaramillo has enthusiasm when working on stories.
“It is fun, but it is nerve racking when you get into it,” Jaramillo said.
Mikey Tongko said there is balance between preparation and adaptability in newsrooms.
“Always expect the unexpected,” Tongko said.
Both student Israel Diaz and professor Hugo Perez have eagerness for the team to grow as reporters, while contributing to the team.
“I want to bring out the experience I can,” Diaz said.
“We are accepting students on campus,” Perez said. “We want to find out what the student’s interest are.”
Faculty also played a central role in setting expectations. Professor Nick Miller talked to students about the importance of professionalism and responsibility in journalism, underscoring the program’s commitment to preparing undergraduates for careers in the industry.
Miller has a message for students.
“Pay more attention to the ethics in journalism and learn how to write,” Miller said.
The event served as more than just an introduction. It reinforced the collaborative spirit and high standards that define News22. With new members joining the ranks and returning members stepping back into leadership roles, the newsroom is poised for another semester of impactful student reporting.
