LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State University women’s soccer team will be back in action against Big West opponent California State University, Fullerton at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, on the road at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, California.
The Aggies have started the year with a 1-7 win-loss record after three consecutive winning seasons. Its two recent losses came to Big 12 opponent Texas Tech University Sept. 4 at home, and I-25 rival University of New Mexico at the UNM Soccer Complex Sept. 7 in Albuquerque.
NM State put up a spirited effort against TTU but ultimately could not break through, falling 2–0.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders struck early and often, building up momentum following a 2-0 shut out win over Southern Methodist University.
While the Aggies held their ground defensively for stretches, they could not find a way past the Red Raiders compact backline and disciplined structure.
Texas Tech broke the deadlock in the 69th minute when Taylor Zdrojewski found the back of the net off an assist from Macy Blackburn.
Zdrojewski struck again just seven minutes later, with Blackburn delivering another setup to add to the lead and seal the match. Despite NM State’s efforts, they could not claw back.
This influenced ball movement and player positioning, even when the Aggies were forced into a defensive posture. For those watching, it was clear the new surface is shaping how NM State plays its home matches.
Despite the loss, there were positives. The Aggies showed resilience and tactical discipline, particularly in midfield. Goalkeeper Valerie Guha continued to show her importance between the posts, organizing the defense and making key saves to keep the scoreboard respectable.
Regardless of the effort, NMSU fell 4-0 against UNM only three days later. This rough start underscores the uphill climb the program is on, playing a challenging schedule and facing elite competition back-to-back.
Last season, the Aggies finished 11-6-3, good enough for third place in Conference USA.
