LAS CRUCES N.M. – Sunday evening was a busy time for the New Mexico State University campus, as the university hosted the 39th annual Noche de Luminarias on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. It was followed by the NMSU women’s basketball team securing a 68-60 win over their I-25 rival New Mexico Lobos.
ASNMSU helped organize the event and planned festivities for the crowd. Luminarias were seen starting from the Pan American Center and ending at Hadley Hall. The Corbett Center held a Santa letter writing station for children. Decorating cookies, taking pictures with Santa and train rides were also available. Wave the Wonder Dog even made an appearance and multiple individuals took pictures with him.
Musical performances took place at the Pan American Center, where many mouth-watering refreshments were available for the public to enjoy with their families while experiencing the events. An inflatable obstacle course and snow globe photo station at Corbett Center were highlights for many.
The NMSU Bookstore was open for the night, which is unusual for a Sunday, and families had the chance to check it out and buy university apparel.
Many students made it out to the event. Some said it saved them from the stress of finals week as they were able to focus on the luminarias and be with their friends.
“Well, I was stressing the whole day studying,” student Micah Onyango said. “Going to that event took my mind off things and made me happier.”
