LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State University is firing women’s basketball head coach Jody Adams after four seasons leading the program.
New Mexico State’s Director of Athletics Joe Fields made the announcement on Sunday, March 8, where he thanked Adams for her service to Aggie Athletics and its student-athletes.
“We appreciate the work she has put into the program and the positive impact she has had on many young women during her career and time at NM State,” Fields said.
Fields emphasized how the move aligns with the department’s vision for the program, where its commitments to growth and long-term success can be met.
“Our vision for Aggie Women’s Basketball remains unwavering,” Fields said. “We are fully committed to competing for championships, graduating our student-athletes and operating a first-class organization that embodies the values of New Mexico State University. We are excited about the future of this program and the opportunities ahead.”
The department has already begun its search for its next women’s basketball coach and will seek to quickly find one who aligns with their vision.
The announcement comes at the close of a disappointing 2025-26 season that saw the team end with a 9-21 record (5-13 Conference USA). This netted them an 11th-place finish in their conference and missing the Conference USA Tournament.
Adams led the Aggies to a 57-71 overall record during her four-year tenure as a head coach. Although she led promising 2022-23 and 2024-25 campaigns, where the team finished above .500 and had post-season berths, the latest season resulted in her worst record at the program and ended on a 55-71 loss at Sam Houston to cap a three-game losing skid.
