LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State baseball team returns back to Presley Askew Field for a home opener weekend series versus Towson University Feb. 20-22. This is the first matchup between the two programs since 2018.
The Aggies will debut the new turf at a ballpark where they went 14-14 last season. This is the first time NMSU has not started its season at home since the 2021 campaign. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. tonight, Feb. 20. While Saturday and Sunday’s games are set for 6 p.m. and 11 a.m. respectively.
The Aggies are coming off four consecutive losses to start the year, but all losses come from Power Four programs.
This includes a three-game road series with Baylor. Despite falling 15-2 in the season opener, and allowing redshirt senior first baseman Tyce Armstrong become just the second ever Division I player to hit three grand slams in a single game, NMSU lost just 5-2 and 7-3 in the next two matchups. They followed this up with a 10-6 loss to No. 21 Oklahoma Feb. 23, at Globe Life Field.
Jaden Davis and Hazen Wright were two arms out the bullpen that stepped up in the loss against Oklahoma. Davis and Wright pitched for a combined four scoreless innings, after the team gave up all 10 of Oklahoma’s runs in the first four innings.
Infielder Bryce Campbell and outfielder Aidan Taclas have proved to be crucial to the Aggies early in the year. Campbell has already racked up two home runs and five RBIs. While Taclas has an impressive .357 batting average to go along with five hits and three stolen bases. Both players will be vital in the series with the Tigers.
On the other hand, Towson is off to a 2-1 start to the year after finishing just 21-35 last season. After falling 2-0 to Norfolk State in the first of three games, the Tigers put together two dominant performances against them in a doubleheader on Valentine’s Day. They surged to a 12-3 victory to start the afternoon and followed it up with an astonishing 28-4 win directly after.
The first 200 fans that arrive at the stadium for the first matchup will receive an exclusive hat. Vouchers will be redeemable in the fifth inning. There will also be a smart TV drawing in the sixth inning. Individuals can sign up at the marketing table inside the ballpark. People can listen to the game on KRUX 91.5 FM.
