LAS CRUCES, N.M. — On a crisp Friday evening at the NM State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, the New Mexico State Aggies turned a highly anticipated Conference USA matchup into a statement performance. With energy building from the first pitch, NMSU wasted no time asserting control, delivering a dominant 8–0 shutout victory over Western Kentucky University. It was the kind of complete performance that sends a message across the conference.
The tone was established immediately in the opening inning. Senior slugger Devin Elam ignited the Aggies’ offense with a leadoff home run that electrified the crowd and set the pace.
The momentum only grew from there. Skye Johnson followed with timely hitting, and Jade Valladares crushed a three-run blast that broke the game open early. By the end of the first inning, Western Kentucky was already facing an uphill climb, while the Aggies looked locked in at every level.
In the circle, Faith Aragon delivered a masterclass in command and composure. The right-hander worked five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight. Her ability to mix pitches and attack hitters kept the Hilltoppers off balance all night long. Behind her, the Aggies’ defense played clean fundamental softball, eliminating any opportunity for Western Kentucky to build momentum.
Offensively, NMSU’s lineup remained relentless. The Aggies piled up 13 hits, consistently applying pressure and capitalizing on opportunities. Every at-bat carried intent. Every inning felt controlled. By the time the run rule came into effect in the fifth inning, the outcome had long been decided.
This wasn’t just another win for New Mexico State it was a statement. Power at the plate. Precision in the circle. Discipline in the field. If this performance is any indication, the Aggies are not just competing in CUSA they’re positioning themselves as a force to be reckoned with.
The next two games in the series – Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29 – were less successful for the Aggies, as they dropped the Saturday game 7-5, and the Sunday game 9-4. The series leaves the Aggies with a 17-18 overall record, and 7-5 in Conference USA, good for fifth place in the 12-team league. Western Kentucky’s victories in Las Cruces gave them an 8-4 conference mark, putting them in fourth place.
Next up, the Aggies will travel to Jacksonville, Ala., for a three-game series April 2-4 against the CUSA-leading Gamecocks, who have an 11-1 conference record.
When NM State returns home April 10-12, the Aggies will host Interstate-10 rival Texas-El Paso, currently in 11th place in CUSA.
