ABILENE, TEXAS — The New Mexico State men’s basketball (7-1) team was defeated for the first time Tuesday, Dec. 2, against the University of South Alabama (6-3) 77-75.
The game was held at Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas, where the Aggies held on to a 36-32 halftime lead but ultimately fell short.
Guards Jayland Randall and Elijah Elliott led the charge for the Aggies, combining for 39 points off the bench. Guard Jemel Jones finished one rebound away from his first-career double-double, putting up 17 points and nine rebounds.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars defense forced 13 turnovers and held NMSU to its second-lowest three-point percentage of the season of 24.3%.
Next, the Aggies will travel to face Abilene Christian University (6-3) Saturday, Dec. 6, at 2 p.m. MT. The Aggies will look to bounce back against the Wildcats, who outlasted NMSU last season in a close 78-70 contest.
ACU is 5-1 on their home court, while NMSU are searching for their first away win.
Jones leads the Aggies in scoring, averaging 16.1 points per game. Forward Julius Mims is also putting up 8.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, while shooting 65% from the field.
A win for NMSU would improve its record to 7-1, as they would be the only team in Conference USA with only one loss on the year.
