LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State baseball team lost 12-10 to its I-25 rival University of New Mexico Lobos Tuesday, April 15. It was Jackie Robinson Day and the Aggies celebrated his honor by having No. 42 painted in white right above second base.
NMSU pitcher Cade Shumard started the night on the mound, but exited early after giving up three-first inning runs. Jaden Davis came in to relieve and gave up a bases clearing double before closing out the inning.
The Aggies started its scoring off in similar fashion by walking in a run. They went on to score three-first inning runs.
The Lobos added a few more runs over the course of the next several innings, giving them a 12-6 advantage entering the eighth inning. The Aggies fought back as they snagged four runs in the bottom of the eighth, led by a two-run single from outfielder Austin Corbett. They then loaded the bases, but left three stranded to end the inning.
In the ninth, the Aggies defense would allow two hits but got out of the jam after a base running error by the Lobos. In the bottom of the ninth, Mitch Namie had a lead off bunt single. The Aggies failed to capitalize with a runner on and went on to lose its third straight game.
With this loss, the Aggies overall record is now 18-19, while still maintaining a 6-6 conference record. The Lobos are now 20-16 overall with an 8-7 conference record.
NMSU will have one final chance to get a win against the Lobos as the two teams are set to face off Tuesday, April 22, in Albuquerque. The Aggies host Conference USA opponent Jacksonville State in a three-game series this weekend. First pitch is Thursday, April 17, at 6 p.m.
