LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Construction is underway at the New Mexico State University women’s soccer field. Leveling out the grass is the current priority while the Aggies are competing in spring soccer.
The work started as a result of the players and coaching staff’s concerns regarding patches, delicate spots and surface seepage issues that made ranges of the field hazardous.
Since construction began, the Aggies’ home games have been played at the UDA field on campus, which hasn’t been an issue since it is spring soccer. The construction is scheduled to be finished before the 2025 season begins in August.
“The field will remain with actual grass,” NMSU Athletics Assistant Media Relations Director Louis Bolander said. “I believe they are only leveling it out.”
The field has experienced normal wear and tear over the years With the Las Cruces climate fluctuating between dry spells and sudden rainstorms, wastewater has been a repeating issue. Groups started evacuating the topsoil layer in early April and are anticipated to work through the next several weeks.
In addition to leveling the field, the venture will replace the water system framework. This construction could offer assistance for future climate conditions like overwhelming rain.
The university had been putting off major remodels due to budget constraints, instead choosing passing fixes like grass patches, sand topdressing and reseeding.
The Aggies will look to play their 2025 season with a more level field and a better look. Not only will this benefit the team, it will benefit the fans and give them a different perspective.
