LAS CRUCES, N.M.— In New Mexico and especially Las Cruces, food is a vital part of the culture by being ingrained in people’s daily lives. New Mexican and Mexican cuisine are key parts of Las Cruces’ identity. I wanted to explore some of the local favorites across the city, comparing presentations, taste and cost.
The first dish I set out to review was birria tacos. My first stop was El Vagón Taco Shop, located at 1602 Solano Drive. They are open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Sunday and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
The overall presentation of the birria tacos stood out. The dish comes with four tacos, two types of chile sauce, a cup of birria consommé, fresh cilantro and onions. For $13, it is a great value. The flavor is rich in every bite and both chile sauces bring a nice heat without overwhelming the dish. Considering the quality and portion size for the price, it is more than worth it.
El Vagon also offers other meat options and menu items that look just as tempting, making it a place worth returning for anyone wanting authentic, flavorful tacos in Las Cruces.
