FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The New Mexico State swimming and diving team fell to Northern Arizona University Friday, Nov. 7, 191.5–108.5, in a competitive dual meet that tested the Aggies from start to finish. Despite several standout performances, NMSU was unable to overcome the defending Western Athletic Conference champions on the road.
The Aggies opened the meet strong with back-to-back event victories. Katie Rink set the tone early, dominating the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.31. In the following event, Dreamer Kowatch and Natalia Florian delivered a one-two finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Kowatch touched first at 1:52.58, followed closely by Florian at 1:52.99.
After NAU began to build momentum, the Aggies broke through again in the sprint events. Dijana Mazumdar continued her impressive season by winning both the 50-yard freestyle (23.29) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.25), edging out her NAU opponents by less than a second in each race.
Rink closed out NMSU’s wins with another strong showing in the 500-yard freestyle, taking first with a time of 5:02.38.
Following the meet, head coach Rick Pratt praised his team’s effort despite the loss.
“Traveling up to Flagstaff is always a big challenge. Despite the loss, the score does not show how well we competed,” Pratt said. “Our freestylers were strong today with Katie and Dijana swimming the fastest times in the MPSF as of today. Dreamer also had an incredible day swimming right on her best time winning the 200, and also with a conference-leading swim… We had mostly all season-best swims today and have much to be proud of.”
