CrimsonWire Positions
CrimsonWire is a student-run digital media platform of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at NMSU. Student staff members are qualified volunteers who agree to meet the responsibilities of their position and serve as team members alongside other staff. Staff members are selected by department faculty after completing an application process.
Appointments to staff positions are for one academic year (unless otherwise agreed upon with the faculty advisor) beginning in the fall semester and ending at the end of the Spring semester. Students are eligible to re-apply for selection for another year.
Failure to maintain any of the required responsibilities may result in termination of the appointment at the discretion of the faculty advisors or Journalism and Media Studies Department Head. In some instances, staff members may be eligible to receive class credit for their work during one or both semesters, in which case the class syllabus overrides any listed responsibilities. Staff appointments are not employment and are not entitled to compensation.

Multimedia Journalist
Position Summary:
CrimsonWire, the student-run digital news platform of New Mexico State University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, is looking for innovative and versatile Multimedia Journalists to join our team. This role is an exciting opportunity for students to tell compelling stories through various media formats, including video, audio, photography, and written content. As a Multimedia Journalist, you will produce engaging, high-quality journalism that informs and connects with our diverse audience.
This position includes people who want to serve in the following focus areas: writing, photography, podcasting, and visual journalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research, pitch, and produce original content across multiple platforms, including video, audio, photography, or written articles as assigned.
- Conduct interviews, gather information, and create multimedia packages that capture the essence of the story.
- Collaborate with editors and other team members to align stories with CrimsonWire’s mission and editorial guidelines.
- Stay informed about current events, local news, and digital media trends to generate relevant and timely content.
- Maintain ethical journalism practices and adhere to deadlines.
- Aid in maintaining an archive of CrimsonWire multimedia content.
- Collaborate with the staff to create impactful, informative, and high-quality content.
Required:
- Current student at New Mexico State University with an interest in journalism, media production, or a related field.
- Knowledge of journalism ethics and standards.
- Strong storytelling skills and a passion for multimedia journalism.
- Strong command of AP Style
- Strong written communication skills.
- Proficiency in your focus area(s): writing, photography, podcasting, and visual journalism.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with a team.
Preferred:
- Familiarity with web content management systems
- Successful completion of JOUR 110, JOUR 201, and JOUR 319.
- Previous experience in multimedia journalism, such as student media, internships, or personal projects.
- Basic photography and photo-editing skills.
- Creative mindset with the goal of finding new ways to tell stories with digital tools.

Copyeditor
Position Summary:
CrimsonWire, the student-run digital news platform of New Mexico State University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, is seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented Copyeditor to join our team. This role is essential to ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and professionalism of all content published on CrimsonWire. The Copyeditor will work closely with multimedia journalists, editors, and the broader team to uphold the highest standards of grammar, AP style, and journalistic integrity. This is an excellent opportunity for students passionate about language, media, and quality storytelling to build hands-on experience in digital journalism.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and edit website and social media content and other written content for grammar, punctuation, spelling, and clarity.
- Ensure all content adheres to AP Style, CrimsonWire’s style guide, and journalistic standards.
- Fact-check content to verify accuracy and credibility of information.
- Collaborate with writers to provide constructive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- Work with managing editors to prioritize and manage editing workflows to meet deadlines.
- Ensure consistency of tone and voice across all published pieces.
- Identify and correct potential legal or ethical issues in content before publication.
- Stay updated on current trends in language usage, journalism practices, and digital media.
Required:
- Current student at New Mexico State University with an interest in journalism, English, communication, or a related field.
- Strong command of grammar, punctuation, and journalistic style.
- Strong command of AP Style.
- Exceptional attention to detail and an ability to spot errors quickly.

Social Media News Manager
Position Summary:
CrimsonWire, the student-run digital news platform of New Mexico State University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, is seeking a talented and motivated Social Media News Manager to oversee our social media news strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the digital presence of CrimsonWire while gaining valuable real-world experience in social media management for a dynamic news organization. The Social Media News Manager will collaborate closely with the Managing Editor and other team members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy to share news on social media.
- Manage and maintain CrimsonWire’s social media accounts, including but not limited to Instagram, Twitter (X), and Facebook, as well as any others that may be created in the future.
- Share CrimsonWire website content on social media in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the editorial team to identify key stories and adapt them for social media audiences.
- Work with multimedia journalists to create original social-first news content
- Monitor and respond to comments, messages, and mentions to foster a sense of community and uphold the platform’s reputation.
- Analyze social media performance using analytics tools and prepare regular reports to inform strategies.
- Stay updated on trends in social media, digital journalism, and audience engagement to innovate CrimsonWire’s social media approach.
- Assist in the training and mentorship of fellow students interested in social media and digital communications.
Required:

- Experience managing personal or organizational social media accounts.

Newsletter Manager
Position Summary:
CrimsonWire, the student-run digital news platform of New Mexico State University’s Department of Journalism and Media Studies, is seeking a detail-oriented and creative Newsletter Manager to join our team. The Newsletter Manager will oversee the creation and distribution of CrimsonWire’s email newsletter, ensuring they effectively engage and inform our audience. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in digital publishing, audience engagement, and content curation while shaping the voice of our newsletter outreach.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, curate, and produce regular email newsletters to promote CrimsonWire content.
- Collaborate with editors and multimedia journalists to select newsletter content and craft compelling summaries.
- Write engaging subject lines and introductions that capture the audience’s attention.
- Ensure newsletters are visually appealing, accessible, and aligned with CrimsonWire’s brand identity.
- Manage email lists, ensuring they are accurate, up-to-date, and compliant with privacy regulations.

Position Summary:

In this role, you will develop and execute strategies to raise awareness of CrimsonWire’s content, events, and mission while strengthening its connection with the NMSU community. This is an exciting opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in PR, branding, and event promotion while contributing to the success of a growing digital news platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement promotional strategies to enhance CrimsonWire’s visibility and reputation on and off campus.
- Manage outreach efforts to engage with the audience.
- Create regular promotional content on CrimsonWire’s social media channels.
- Monitor public perception of CrimsonWire and provide feedback to leadership on opportunities for improvement.
- Track the success of promotional campaigns and prepare regular reports to evaluate outcomes.
- Stay informed about trends in public relations, media outreach, and digital promotion to innovate strategies.
