LAS CRUCES, N.M. — As the semester comes to a close, CrimsonWire is saying goodbye to two seniors whose work, leadership and dedication helped shape the student newsroom and the stories it told throughout the year.
Marshall Mecham, CrimsonWire’s first digital editor, and Sydney Huber have both been part of CrimsonWire since its beginning in the fall of 2024. Both students have covered anything that was asked of them, whether that be sports, crime or local campus events. These two have helped start a foundation that will leave an everlasting impact on CrimsonWire.
We asked the two students to give a paragraph about what they learned and any advice they wanted to leave behind. With that being said, from everyone at CrimsonWire, thank you Sydney and Marshall!
Marshall Mecham:
Before starting college at New Mexico State University, I was told the experience would go by fast, and that proved to be true. During my time at NMSU, I learned the importance of being factual, versatile and consistent in everything I do. As a Journalism and Media Studies major with minors in Social Media Management and Strategic Communications, I gained valuable experience through CrimsonWire, Kokopelli, News22, NM State Athletics and as an intern at the Artesia Daily Press. Those opportunities taught me skills ranging from reporting and photography to media relations and social media content. My biggest advice to aspiring students is to take advantage of every opportunity, even if it falls outside your comfort zone, because every experience can teach you something valuable for the future. Lastly, I met so many amazing people in my time at NMSU that I will be connected with forever. This includes both friends and professors. They are a big reason I’m the person I am today and they will never be forgotten.
Sydney Huber:
As my time here at NMSU comes to a close and I start my new life, I am grateful for everything that this school, department and CrimsonWire has taught me. I am graduating with a degree in Journalism and Media Studies with a focus in Sports Media. When I started CrimsonWire, which was still Kokopelli at the time, I felt that I didn’t know what I was doing and I wasn’t going to be good at it. But over time, with the right peers and professors, I have become more confident in who I am as a journalist and writer. Thanks to CrimsonWire, Assistant College Professor Richard Coltharp, and my team, I feel I am ready to face the world of journalism and spread my wings. If I can leave NMSU with my best piece of advice: Do everything. Try new things at least once. Face what you are scared to do because you might end up loving it. Always make the most of your time here because it’ll be over before you know it.
