LAS CRUCES N.M. – September was National Hispanic Heritage Month, and NMSU dance brought some rhythm to the celebration. Celebración de la Danza y la Cultura showed off the program’s impressive range from Mexican folklórico and Latin ballroom to flamenco programs from the NMSU DanceSport ensemble.
The pride of New Mexico band and flamenco students all came together for an evening celebration Sunday, Sept. 15. The performances featured special choreography from the director of dance from the Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua, Abraham Quintero.
Dance program coordinator Ryan McMullen elaborated further on the significance of the event.
“Just because we have so much Hispanic culture here, especially in the dance program, most of our students are of Hispanic descent, and I really wanted to make sure that we highlighted them and give them an opportunity to just really shine in their own way,” McMullen said.
The event featured five dance acts: “Herencia Latina” choreographed by George Torres Jr., “Pelea de Gallos” choreographed by Sophie Ostos and “Sevillanas” which featured traditional choreography adapted by Applehelen Kirby. The final two dances were “Danza del Venado” and “El Rodeo” both choreographed by Ruben Abraham Quintero Gomez.
