LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State University and Doña Ana Community College encouraged students, faculty and others to register to vote and have their voices heard at a National Voter Registration event Sept. 17.
NMSU and DACC hosted the event on their campuses to encourage students to vote. Organizers said that it is important for students and other individuals to vote in the Nov. 5 elections to make their voice heard.
“I do feel like I have a really important opinion,” NMSU student Kimberly Robles-Gil said. “I think my voice has a sense of value in this.”
Diane Hendley, a registration worker, said voting is a way to make sure people have input in government.
“The vote is your voice,” Hendley said. “You can’t complain about things unless you made your wishes known.”
Voter registration drives are held periodically in hope of increasing student engagement with government. Both NMSU and DACC said they hope to continue these events to increase student voting and others to vote to get their voices heard.

Early voting begins on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and ends Saturday, Nov. 2. The General Election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
