LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Dr. Paul Furth has been a professor in the department of electrical engineering at New Mexico State University for 31 years, and he’s been singing worship music on campus since 2024.
“It’s for him, I play for God,” Furth said. “But I play out in the open as an invitation for everyone on the NMSU campus to also join in worshiping God and pray to him, asking him for mercy.”
Furth is a Charismatic Christian. He describes this as a charismatic congregation of people who love the Bible, the power of God, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
“There are gifts of the spirit that I operate in,” Furth said. “Prophetic gifts, sometimes words of knowledge, and I speak in a heavenly language, also known as the gift of tongues.”
Furth grew up going to church, but stopped going after his parents’ divorce when he was 12. From then until he was 19, Furth was an atheist.
“I became my own god,” Furth said. “I decided what was right and wrong for my life, what I could do and couldn’t do, and what was ok.”
At this point, Furth was a junior in college and things weren’t going great. Until one day his older brother paid him a visit and told him one simple thing:
“Try Jesus.”
So he did. He opened the scriptures to see if Jesus was truly love, if he was someone he could follow and trust.
“And I’ll say, the answer is yes,” Furth said.
So at the age of 19, he began to follow Jesus Christ.
Since then, Furth has moved from Washington, D.C., to Las Cruces with his wife, Cara, and children. He teaches electronics, circuits, and computer programming, and he plays worship music under the tent between Garcia Hall and Corbett Center a few times a week.
“He could retire, but he loves it,” Cara Furth said.
