LAS CRUCES, N.M. — New Mexico State women’s soccer is nearing the end of its nonconference schedule, with two matches remaining against I-10 rival UTEP and Northern Arizona.
Sitting at 1-6-1, the Aggies have faced a challenging start to the season, including three matches against Power Four opponents. However, the team gained momentum in its most recent match, earning a 1-1 draw against their northern rivals the University of New Mexico. Forward/midfielder Esme Arenas, who leads the team in goals, scored the equalizer in the 89th minute to help secure the result.
New Mexico State was picked to finish eighth of 10 teams in the Conference USA preseason poll, receiving 29 total points. With conference play approaching, the Aggies look to play spoiler to CUSA with their new found momentum, especially if they can finish strong in their last two nonconference games.
NMSU has struggled to score this season, being shut out in five of their eight matches. However, after spending more than a month away from home, New Mexico State has returned to Las Cruces for a four-match homestand, giving the team an opportunity to build momentum before conference play begins.
The Aggies will open CUSA play Sunday, Sept. 27, at home versus Florida International University, but the Aggies can’t look too far ahead as they welcome UTEP Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. local time, with the match streaming live on ESPN+. The Aggies will then welcome Northern Arizona Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. local time.
