LAS CRUCES, N.M. — NM State Esports and the University of New Mexico Esports are taking the Rio Grande Rivalry to a new stage this week, competing across nine video games to determine which school has the top collegiate esports program in the state.
The weeklong competition, which began Sunday, Sept. 20, and runs through Friday, Sept. 25, features a best-of-nine series between the Aggies and Lobos. The competition comes during the week of the annual Rio Grande Rivalry football game, which will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
New Mexico State and New Mexico have competed against each other since 1894, but the rivalry expanded into esports in 2018, giving students another way to compete for in-state bragging rights.
The Aggies and Lobos opened the series Sunday with Splatoon 3 before moving into two games Monday, Marvel Rivals and Counter-Strike 2.
NM State competed in Valorant on Tuesday, while Wednesday’s matchups will feature Super Smash Bros. and Overwatch.
The rivalry will continue Thursday with Rocket League at 5 p.m. MT before the series concludes Friday with Halo and League of Legends beginning at 6 p.m. MT.
Through the first 4 games, UNM leads the series 4-0. The team with the most wins at the end of the week will claim the esports rivalry title.
The competition gives both programs an opportunity to represent their universities during one of the biggest rivalry weeks of the year while adding a new layer to the annual battle between the Aggies and Lobos.
The remaining matches can be watched live on the NM State Esports Twitch channel at twitch.tv/nmstateesports.
