Meet New People and Stay Active at the NMSU Recreation Center

When beginning college, it can be hard to try something new or get stuck in the stress of school.

One place for New Mexico State University students to avoid this, and find a great way to stay active and meet new people is at the activity center (commonly called the AC).

The NMSU Recreation Center offers more than just a place to work out. From intramural sports and fitness classes to sport clubs, outdoor recreation and climbing, the AC gives us plenty of opportunities to do something you love or find something new. A big plus is free membership for full-time students.

Located in the Activity Center, University Recreation (or U-Rec) gives access to programs designed toencourage health, wellness and community. The facility includes a fitness center, indoor running track, basketball and volleyball courts, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, yoga room, indoor cycling room and more. Along with all of this, there is a friendly staff willing to help you in any way.

Intramural Sports

One of the easiest ways for students to get involved is through NMSU’s Intramural Sports program. Intramurals are a fun but competitive way to play sports while getting the chance to meet fellow students. Students can participate in tournaments with the options of men’s, women’s, and co-ed teams. Sports offered throughout the year include soccer, volleyball, flag football, pickleball, kickball, Wiffle ball, basketball, badminton, ultimate Frisbee, disc golf, racquetball, dodgeball, softball and futsal.

Intramural sports are a great option for students who want to compete without the commitment of a varsity team. Whether you already have a group of friends to play with or are looking to meet new people, intramurals offer a chance to build friendships. When going to college, it is easy to fall off on your fitness routine; this gives you a reason to stay active.

Students can register for teams, view schedules, access game information and follow results through the Fusion Play app.

Group Fitness

If the one thing stopping you from working out is going alone, U-Rec offers a variety of Group Fitness classes. Pilates is one of the options, and focuses on strength, flexibility, balance and body awareness. The class combines controlled movement, breathing and proper body mechanics, making it a good option for students at different fitness levels.

Other group fitness options include indoor cycling, yoga, Zumba and Toning. Indoor cycling provides a cardio workout that can include hill climbs, sprints and flat-road intervals. Yoga classes can include different styles such as Vinyasa, Hatha and Dynamic Flow. Zumba combines dance and fitness with Latin and international music. Group fitness classes offer a welcoming environment. Instructors help participants stay motivated while encouraging healthy fitness habits.

Sport Clubs

Sport Clubs give students the opportunity to participate in organized sports while connecting with other students who share similar interests. Clubs can provide opportunities to practice, compete, and develop leadership skills. This is a place where students of any skill level can participate. Its a great place to start something new. NMSU offers a variety of clubs; you can look at their Instagram or website if you are interested. For students passionate about a particular sport or simply want to try something different, a sport club can be a great way to become part of a community on campus.

Outdoors

Recreation at NMSU is not limited to the Activity Center. The Outdoor Center gives students opportunities to explore activities outside and provides equipment rentals, bicycle repair services, maps, guides and other resources. Students can rent equipment such as backpacks, mountain bikes, climbing shoes, and more. These resources make it easier for students to experience outdoor activities without having to purchase all of the equipment themselves.

Specifically, the Activity Center has a 28-foot climbing wall and a 12-foot bouldering wall. The climbing program also offers clinics and competitions.

The NMSU Recreation Center is designed to be more than just a place to exercise.
