LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The New Mexico State Aggies are less than a day away from opening the 2026 season, and they could not have asked for a bigger stage.
The Aggies will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, Saturday, Aug. 29, to take on the Florida State Seminoles inside the historic Doak Campbell Stadium, marking the beginning of what New Mexico State hopes will be a new chapter in the third rendition of the Tony Sanchez era.
For New Mexico State, this is not simply another game on the schedule. It is the first opportunity of the season to see how a team that has spent the offseason preparing, competing and building chemistry responds when the lights come on and the games finally count. The Aggies are entering their third season under head coach Tony Sanchez, and they will begin that season on the road against one of college football’s most recognizable programs.
The setting alone makes Saturday night different.

Doak Campbell Stadium holds more than 67,000 fans, and the atmosphere in Tallahassee is expected to provide the Aggies with an immediate test. New Mexico State has not opened a season on the road since 2019, when the Aggies traveled to Washington State. Now, they begin 2026 in one of the most intimidating environments in college football.
Sanchez understands exactly what his team is walking into, but rather than focusing solely on the opponent or the size of the moment, he believes the excitement of opening day would be there regardless of who was standing across the field.
“I think anytime you get to the first game of the season, I don’t know if it matters who you played, you’re going to be frothing, you’re going to be ready,” Sanchez said.
But playing Florida State, in Tallahassee, adds another layer to the experience.
“Having it be against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium, a lot of history, tradition, it’s going to be an exciting environment,” Sanchez said.
That environment will be especially important for an Aggie offense led by quarterback Trey Hedden, who is preparing to make his New Mexico State debut after transferring from Furman. Hedden brings experience into the season opener after throwing for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns during the 2025 season at Furman.
For Hedden, Saturday is about more than simply getting through the first game. He sees the matchup as an opportunity for New Mexico State to prove what it can do when given the chance to compete on a major stage.
“We got a lot of opportunity ahead of us, but we gotta go seize it,” Hedden said. “Got to go take advantage, you know? We have a lot of potential, but potential means nothing until you capitalize on it.”
That mindset could define New Mexico State’s season opener.
The Aggies know the potential is there. They know the opportunity is there. But once the ball is kicked off, none of that matters unless the team can execute. The Aggies will have to handle the atmosphere, stay composed and turn the work they have put in throughout the offseason into production on the field.
For a team beginning its season against Florida State, the challenge is immediate. The Seminoles enter the matchup as heavy favorites (-31.5), while New Mexico State enters as the underdog with an opportunity to change the expectations surrounding the program.
That is what makes Saturday night so important.

The Aggies do not have to spend the week worrying about what people outside the program expect from them. Their focus is on what happens once they step onto the field. Sanchez wants his team ready for the moment, while Hedden believes the team has to take advantage of the opportunity in front of it.
And now, the opportunity is finally here.
New Mexico State will walk into Doak Campbell Stadium looking to turn preparation into execution, potential into production and anticipation into a performance. The Aggies have spent months preparing for this moment. On Saturday night, they finally get their chance to show what they can do.
The season begins in Tallahassee, under the lights, against FSU. As for NMSU, the message from its head coach and quarterback is clear. Be ready for the moment, embrace the opportunity and when the opportunity comes, capitalize on it.
New Mexico State and Florida State will meet Saturday, Aug. 29, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. local time.
